Moisture sources of heavy precipitation in Xinjiang characterized by meteorological patterns

Abstract In this study, the FLEXible PARTicle dispersion model (FLEXPART) is applied to determine moisture source of heavy precipitation in Xinjiang wet season (April–September) from 1979 2018. This investigated for different meteorological patterns categories based on self-organizing maps (SOM) method. The SOM results suggest that there are four main (N1, N2, N3 and N4) Xinjiang. These match strength position geopotential height anomalies at middle-high levels over Central Asia indicate anomalous activities trough vortex. Further analysis shows centered Tianshan Mountains Kunlun N1 around N2 N4 patterns. There regions contribute each Xinjiang, which listed descending order their contribution rates: southern (29–37%), North–Central (19–27%), northern (14–19%), South–Central (13–16%). varies with pattern.
